Installation views of my work at Spazio Morris. The exhibition “Satus” features seven artists engaging with the domestic space of a Milanese ‘50s apartment that has been left abandoned since the early ‘90s.
I installed three pieces trying to create a close connection between the work and the space: a digital animation displayed behind the door of a cupboard which bears a patterned metal grid, a series of drawings (generated in relation to the pattern of the room’s tiles) on a table in the kitchen, a flour stencil in the shape of an island recalling the cut-outs of exotic places that cover the walls of what used to be a teen-ager’s bedroom.

This series of drawings explores numerous combinations of patterns potentially 'embedded' within the tiles layout of Spazio Morris, a new space for contemporary art in Milan for which I specifically created this piece. The drawings constitute a catalogue of patterns related to textiles and wallpaper in a space which pays homage to William Morris.

The Market Estate Project. Images of the stencil in the living room.

The Market Estate Project is a one day event taking place in north London in a soon to be demolished 1960’s housing estate, featuring 75 artists and 66 site-specific projects across the entire site. My intervention is inside a flat and comprises two floor stencils made of flour.

The flat has been left exactly like the former occupants did upon their departure. The space is disseminated with scattered objects in a rather chaotic way.
I have created delicate powder stencils, made of flour, to interact with the stripped floors and with the chaos of what’s been left behind. The stencils are another layer of dust and experience super-imposed on the history of the floor. This installation is also a reflection on the transient nature of things and of systems, such as this estate.

Random and Miscellaneous, 2009, animation, 14 minutes and 31 seconds.

This is the result of a residency project I carried out at the London Library, a private library in central London which has a unique shelfmark system based on subject headings that date back to the end of the XIX century.
The 140 items found over a period of time (2008-09) inside the books catalogued by the Retrospective Cataloguing Project staff of the London Library were collected and each was matched to a shelfmark from the Science & Miscellaneous category of the Library's unique classification scheme.
My aim was to marry the randomness of the found objects with a categorisation system that brings together practically everything, under the description of 'Science & Miscellaneous'. In this respect, the project is about chaos and the effectiveness (and arbitrariness) of ordering systems in dealing with it, since each shelfmark has been interpreted in a very broad way.

Cubitt Education Library mural design and logo, 2009, spray paint stencil, 240x500cm ca.

I was commissioned to design the logo of the new Cubitt Education Library and was asked to design it with my signature patterns. The individual unit of the pattern is a stylised book, which appears as an abstract shape in the repetition of the pattern. The pattern of books symbolises the library as an ensemble of books that are catalogued and orderly stacked in shelves; as books go out to readers, their content (and physicality) spreads out, hence the pattern loses its solid structure. The meaning is embedded in the pattern, in its unit as well as in the whole.
The commission also included a wall paint replicating the logo pattern; I worked with stencil, which is a recurrent process within my practice.

Commissioned by: Microsoft Design IT Competition 2007 (charity project)

Following an open submission, Microsoft chose a group of IT designers and a group of young artists. Each of the artists interpreted one of the designers' IT systems in support of a charity.
I created this piece in response to IT programme “Sudoku Chaos” by Glen Reid in support of Leonard Cheshire Charity for disability.
Crosses refer to chromosomes and the sudoku game refers to the chaos and order or DNA (with reference to the issue of disability); the installation can be played with as a real sudoku.

My daily emotional states from January 1st 2006 to December 31st 2006 categorised according to the four humours, 2007-2010, animation on DVD, 1 minute and 6 seconds.

This piece, like all the pieces from the same series, was made out of the daily collection of my emotions, according to four categories (which are the four humours: melancholic, colleric, sanguigne and phlegmatic). The animation is generated by numerical data (the measuring of my emotions), by data relating to time and by colours corresponding to the humours.

Samples are collected by the artist, labeled and catalogued in a folder.
